Factfulness book5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a very interesting read for anyone that is interested in re-assessing how they view the world. The crux of the book is that the world is in a much better position than most people think it is. The author outlines 10 instincts that everyone has, the impact they have on our assumptions of the state of the world, and details how we can overcome them by using statistics and thinking rationally. Throughout the book, Rosling shows that even the smartest people have no real idea of what state the world is in at the moment and how this has changed over the years. Factfulness is the idea of only strongly investing in opinions when you have robust facts to back your argument up. Hans Rosling introduces the concept of Factfulness. Factfulness: Ten Reasons We’re Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think is a book about challenging assumptions and conventional wisdom. ![]() The mafia and his angel 1 lylah james5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I could tell it was something really bad. “We’ve got a problem,” a harsh voice said through the phone. Over time things worked out: Glenn successfully built a strong business, created a new home, and forged a life he could be proud of.ĭespite his success, his estrangement from the Holloways is still a sore spot he can’t quite heal, and a called-in favor becomes Glenn’s worst nightmare. Without support from his father and brother, and too proud to accept assistance from anyone else, he had to start from scratch. As if that wasn’t enough, he then poured salt in the wound by walking away from the ranch he’d grown up on, to open the restaurant he’d always dreamed of. Glenn Holloway’s predictable life ended the day he confessed his homosexuality to his family. ![]() Easter wings poem5/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The text is carved in the form of a spiral on the front of one of the church pews and created in 1510 by master carpenter Erhart Falckener. The post-Classical revival of shaped poetry seems to begin with the Gerechtigkeitsspirale (spiral of justice), a relief carving of a poem at the pilgrimage church of St. Examples include poems by Simmias of Rhodes in the shape of an egg, wings and a hatchet, as well as Theocritus’ pan-pipes. Such shaped poetry was popular in Greek Alexandria during the 3rd and 2nd centuries BCE, although only the handful which were collected together in the Greek Anthology now survive. Though the term ‘concrete poetry’ is modern, the idea of using letter arrangements to enhance the meaning of a poem is old. Historically, however, concrete poetry has developed from a long tradition of shaped or patterned poems in which the words are arranged in such a way as to depict their subject. Concrete poetry relates more to the visual than to the verbal arts although there is a considerable overlap in the kind of product to which it refers. It is sometimes referred to as visual poetry, a term that has now developed a distinct meaning of its own. "Constantinople", a 'ferro-concrete poem' from Tango with Cows by the Russian Futurist Vasily Kamensky, 1914Ĭoncrete poetry is an arrangement of linguistic elements in which the typographical effect is more important in conveying meaning than verbal significance. ![]() ![]() ![]() He then began a career in long distance yacht racing. Chichester was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in 1958 (possibly a misdiagnosed lung abscess), which went into remission after his wife placed him on a strict vegetarian diet. ![]() ![]() In WWII Chichester enlisted for the UK as a Navigation Expert, literally writing the manual for solo fighter aircraft "kneeboard navigation," enabling them to run missions across Europe and return successfully, counteracting the errors resulting from the difficulties of taking sun sights with a sextant alone from a moving airplane. On an attempt to circumnavigate the world solo by airplane some time later he hit an overhead cable and went down in Japan. On Lord Howe Island his plane was heavily damaged and he ended up having to rebuild it himself with the help of native islanders. He made the first solo flight East to West across the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to Australia, and was the first to land an aircraft at Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. Sir Francis Chichester was a distinguished aviator before becoming a yachtsman. ![]() I love accounts of true sailing adventures, and when I recently rediscovered this book on my shelf I finally dove in. Surprisingly, I had never heard of Sir Francis Chichester or of his book Gypsy Moth Circles the World until I found and bought a copy at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney several years ago. ![]() ![]() ![]() Theresa is the third in a family of four children.
